Children to learn about Guyana’s rich, diverse heritage -at sixth Annual Children’s Heritage awareness programme

Georgetown, GINA, July 7, 2016

The National Trust of Guyana will be hosting its sixth annual Children’s Heritage Awareness Programme from July 25 to 29, 2016.

The programme runs from 9:00 hours to 12:00 noon daily, targeting approximately 30 to 40 children between the ages of eight to 11 years.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Trust, Nirvana Persaud told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that some of the aspects of the programme make way for the youths to learn about the, “rich and diverse heritage of Guyana.”

The annual heritage awareness programme which began in 2011, engages children from all walks of life, allowing them to embrace the natural and cultural heritage, more specifically monuments and landmarks in Guyana. The sessions encourage the children to produce creative ideas on how these historic sites and monuments can be beautified and improved.

Children participating in the programme will benefit from tours to historic sites and monuments and will also be involved in model-making of the structures. There are also sessions which would expose the children to public speaking and team building skills, archaeology and anthropology among others, Persaud said.

Additionally they will be asked to identify monuments in their immediate surroundings and embrace their importance.

At the end of the programme, each participant will take a quiz which would serve as their evaluation after which they will presented with a certificate of participation.

The programme was founded to help children become aware of the importance of Guyana’s cultural heritage, their values and everything else they should know about Guyana’s heritage, monuments and sites. They should also have a greater appreciation for Guyana’s history as landmarked by these historic sites and monuments and be able to share their knowledge of the necessary information.

Parents and Guardians who are interested in having their children participate in the programme are asked to uplift registration forms at the National Trust of Guyana, 94 Carmichael Street, Georgetown or contact the office on telephone numbers 225-5071 or 223-7146.
