“Art and dance is an important part of our culture,” hence, the importance of youths being actively involved in cultural activities, Ministry of Education’s Mash Coordinator, Lorraine Barker-King said.

There are over 4,000 participants actively engaged in this year’s Children’s competition regionally in the areas of dance, masquerade, calypso, costume, dramatic poetry, physical display, and choir. The finale began today with the dance and masquerade competitions.

On Friday 16, participants will be vying for top spots in the Calypso and Dramatic Poetry competitions to be held at the at the National Cultural Centre (NCC). The festive and colorful float parade through the streets of Georgetown, on Saturday 17, will officially bring the curtains down on this year’s Children’s Mashramani activities.

Barker-King noted that without collaboration the activities would not have been as successful as they were to date. She thanked Banks DIH Limited, the Ministry of Communities, the Ministry of Public Health, Creditinfo Guyana, and the Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry Limited (GBTI) for their support.

According to the Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, the Ministry has been working to ensure that there is a balanced curriculum in schools across the country. “Creative Arts reflect our diversity and as such children should be given the opportunity to learn arts and physical education, and more so understand the importance of having them with academic achievements.”
