Chinoweng residents will be secured – Min. Ferguson assures

– Too many unknown persons access Indigenous Communities

– Ministry of Public Security to implement measures

DPI, Guyana, Friday, January 18, 2019

Earlier in the week, residents of Chinoweng, Region 7 met with Minister of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson during the ministry’s public day where they were given the opportunity to raise several issues regarding their district.

The Rights Coordinator for the Amerindian People’s Association, Laura George said that one troubling matter is the breach of security in their village. She explained that residents would frequently observe unknown persons intruding their land.

George is of the belief that since Chinoweng is closer to Chichi West Airport, intruders are more than likely to use their village as a transit point for legal and illegal activities.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson said the Ministry of Pubic Security, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission will be informed with a view to collaborate and address the relevant security measures needed.

“We must work as a unit to protect our people,” Minister  Ferguson said.

In addition, she said that Indigenous Communities must be safe from outsiders and all precautionary security measures will be examined and enforced by the pertinent authorities.
