A total of 19 Single-Elevated and Flat housing units are being provided by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) at Onderneeming, West Bank Berbice (WBB) before mid-year. Led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lelon Saul and Director of Projects, Omar Narine, media operatives were taken on a site visit where the construction of 10 of the 19 units commenced.
The construction of the ten Single-Elevated two-bedroom units is being undertaken by four contractors, who have been given a three-month period in which to complete the project.
The size of the houses under construction is approximately 670 square feet on 46ft by 100ft plot of land. “It’s approximately 670 square feet of livable space. Materials used are reinforced concrete, we using some timber for the floor and for the roof we using our zinc materials,” CH&PA’s Project Engineer, Deron McKinnon explained.
According to McKinnon, the aim of the Housing Solution and Beyond Project is ensure quality living quarters/units are provided to citizens at an affordable cost.
In detailing the quality assurance exercises, McKinnon said that “we do all our testing of our materials making sure everything is up to specification our concrete must be over 300 PSI even the placement of the building is taken into consideration”.
Meanwhile, the construction of nine Flat, two and three-bedroom units is expected to commence within two weeks (projected Feb. 20, 2018) at the same location. Director of Operation, Denise King-Tudor outlined that persons who have applied for housing units such as these are free to visit construction sites to view the ongoing works and have an idea of what is being provided by the government
“You can come, see, talk with the engineer on the ground, or the Clerk of Works and they will also be able to advise and guide you of the details of the building itself and what is going on with the building,” King-Tudor said.
Further, she advised that persons desirous of owning one of these homes must apply to the CH&PA to qualify and access one of the housing units. The total cost of each of the Single Elevated two-bedroom units is $8M – $7.5M for the housing unit, and $500,000 for the allocated land, King-Tudor explained.
CEO Saul noted that the Housing Solutions and Beyond Project is expected to provide an overall 247 units in 2018. Construction is currently ongoing at Onderneeming – West Bank Demerara (WBD), Perseverance – East Bank Demerara (EBD) and Bath Experiment – West Coast Berbice (WCB).
