City Hall can do more to clean-up Georgetown-President Ramotar

Georgetown, GINA, January 24, 2014

Whilst Government is prepared to continue its investment into the City of Georgetown, it noted that if City Hall properly manages its resources, it would be able to do more, and be less dependent on Government.

Speaking at a press conference at the Office of the President today, President Donald Ramotar observed that City Hall has hundreds of workers and a huge wage bill of some $80M, but still contract out many of its jobs. The council also has equipment that quickly go out of commission, the President noted.

President Ramotar has tasked the Ministry of Public Works to very quickly come up with a plan that will solve, or at the least reduce, many of the issues affecting the City.

The President said that Government will continue to ‘pump’ resources into the city to ensure a city that all Guyanese could be proud of.

City Hall’s ineptitude to maintain the City continues to be manifested, despite continuous interventions by the Government.

Recently, $56M was invested for a City clean-up exercise in December that was aimed at improving its aesthetic and sanitation.
