Clearing of community playfields – SDC to collaborate with residents

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, January 31, 2018

The Social Development Committee (SDC) within the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is tasked with the responsibility for ‘all open spaces, playfields, day care, maternal and child welfare centres’, according to Mayor Patricia Chase-Green.

Mayor of Georgetown, Patricia Chase-Green advising residents to form committees within their communities.

The Georgetown Mayor made this pronouncement at the commissioning of the new bridges linking Alexander Village to West Ruimveldt on Sunday last. This committee is charged with the maintenance of these spaces.

In each constituency where there is an identified playfield, the City Council will undertake the initial clearing and entrust a committee from the community with the maintenance of the playfield. This committee will have a representative from the council and be comprised mostly of residents of the respective communities.

A schedule will be made available for use of the playfield where necessary, whether it be for football, basketball or any other sport or activity because of a large number of clubs in some communities. This will alleviate problems with clashes and promote a safe space for the use of these grounds.

Mayor Chase-Green told the Department of Public Information(DPI), “when people see us coming into clear (the ground), it’s that we want to clear the playfield so that the children can have the uses of it.  There will be no houses built on these playfields, …. we weren’t able to do this for many years, now we have the opportunity to open our spaces to children to have fun and play”.

The Mayor called on residents to take immense care of the playfields since these are areas for relaxation and enjoyment. She further urged that persons desist from tethering animals in the grounds.

“If the committee sits and decides that they want swings, see-saws, or a basketball court, then it is their prerogative and in their best interest as a community to get that done. They have a say in what they want to be put in their community,” Mayor Chase Green said.

The council is, however, facilitating the clearing of the playfield, assisting in maintenance and fencing and enclosing where necessary.

Reportedly, there are playfields in all the constituencies and the council is also receiving assistance from the Department of Sport, Youth and Culture for the maintenance of some of the playfields.

Over the past year, preparations have been ongoing in some community playfields and this year, the council expects the commencement of the fencing of those grounds.

Additionally, the mayor noted that “nothing will be done at the council level without the resident’s involvement”.
