CME training for medical doctors slated for February 18

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, February 13, 2018

The Medical Council of Guyana is hosting its first round of Continuing Medical Education (CME) for 2018. The educational training session will focus on medical ethics as its theme.

The one-day session is scheduled to be facilitated on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at the National Cultural Centre’s main Auditorium and is opened to practising medical physicians throughout Guyana.

The content of Sunday’s session includes Research Ethics which will be presented by Dr. Karen Bailey MD Pediatric General Surgeon and Clinical Fellow General Surgeon; Brain Death presented by Dr. Alexandra Harvey MD, DM Anesthesia and information on Legal and Legislative considerations of transplant surgery which is to be presented by Dr. Sedar Yilmaz MD, PhD of the Southern Alberta transplant programme.

This training session will afford those participating to earn four credits which will be awarded at the end of the session. CME training sessions serve to maintain, develop and increase the knowledge, skills and professional performance of a physician.

These skills, when acquired are used to provide services for patients, the public, and the profession. The content of CME is the body of knowledge and skills generally recognised and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine and the provision of health care to the public.

According to the Medical Council of Guyana, a physician shall continue to study, apply, and advance scientific knowledge, maintain a commitment to medical education, make relevant information available to patients, colleagues, and the public. They are also to obtain consultation, and use the talents of other health professionals when indicated.

Pre-registration for this session has started on Monday, February 12 and will conclude on Friday, February 16, 2018. The cost for pre-registration is $3,500, however, registration can also be done on the day of the training at the venue costing interested persons $4,000.
