Co-op societies to be formed in Ithaca, Buxton, BV, Mocha

DPI, Guyana, Friday, February 2, 2018

Four (4) communities, Ithaca, Buxton, Beterverwagting (BV) and Mocha will receive support to form Co-operative Societies to assist in pushing their agriculture drive, thereby improving the standard of living of the residents.

This was announced by Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Keith Scott, whilst delivering remarks at the launch of the Guyana National Co-operative Union Limited (GNCUL) train-the-trainers programme, on Friday.

Keith Scott, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection.

Minister Scott explained that his office will be collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to provide technical support to residents and supply equipment to these four communities.

In order for this pilot project to be successful, the National Co-operative Union Limited (GNCUL) needs to be on the ground providing support to the people, he explained.

“They need to have that push-start so that they can move forward…But in order for that to succeed and for it to be an example to other villages, you have to be on the ground and become au-fait with what is happening.”

Minister Scott said that it is time Guyana begins producing and exporting its quality products to the rest of the world, and the Co-operative Societies have a great role to play in this regard.

Cooperative societies are self-generated, voluntary and self-sufficient organisations, democratically controlled by its members. In Guyana, Co-ops are governed by the Co-operative Societies Act of 1998 and are supported by the respective co-operatives regulations and policies. Governments are therefore tasked with the responsibility of maintaining order and effectiveness in the movement.
