Among the innovative projects displayed were an interactive game, a robot, an app for diabetic patients and a device to test the moisture content of the soil.

Fifteen-year-old Supriya Jagdeo from Bygeval Secondary School said their soil moisture sensor could greatly assist farmers. She explained that their device is connected to alligator clips which are attached to nails. These nails are then placed into the soil, and the gauge will read the temperate of the soil.

Alicia Layne, lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Guyana project was app enables diabetic patients to save their health charts, medical history, daily medication reminders and be in contact with their doctors. For her project, Layne conducted a study on 45 persons. She is planning to widen her research and have her app implemented in hospitals across the country

Commending and encouraging the young girls, was Minister of Public Telecommunications Catherine Hughes. “You have created some deliverables that traditionally are being created in developed countries where students have so many more opportunities so I’m glad that we were able to bring a new vision of technology.”

The exposition was a collaborative effort between the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU), within the Ministry of Public Telecommunications and the University of Guyana (UG).

Girls in ICT Day is observed every fourth Thursday in April. The idea is to raise awareness and encourage girls into careers in the ICT sector.
