Cohesion key to upward mobility of Guyana – Min. Ally

DPI, Guyana, Sunday, November 24, 2019

In a heartfelt address to the residents of Lethem, Minister of Social Protection, Hon. Amna Ally underscored the need for a cohesive Guyana.

The minister was speaking at a community meeting held at the roundabout corner, in Lethem, which was the centre of attention two days ago when the Prime Minister Hon. Moses Nagamootoo formally commissioned the main access road in the township.

“Residents of Lethem, your government believes in you, and we know you believe in us. We have a vision for this new township of Lethem and that is to transform it,” Minister Ally said.

“The transformation will see this township becoming a main economic and tourism hub, but we cannot do it alone. Every one of you is important if we are to realise this vision, we must live and work together. The cohesion of our people is important if we are to have upward mobility in Guyana,” Minister Ally added

Meanwhile, in a fiery and direct presentation, Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon underscoring the importance of an educated nation was well received by the audience.

“A rich nation is an educated nation, and His Excellency, President Granger is delivering the promised good life through education. Right here in Lethem, a student passed 20 subjects with good grades, and that is because of the improved educated sector in this region. All regions saw improvements in their results, and that is because of the educational transformation currently ongoing in our country. Lethem, make no mistake in understanding that education is the only gateway to the good life,” DG Harmon remarked.

After the meeting, a minibus and a canter truck were commissioned, which will benefit two separate villages. The vehicles were donated through the Sustainable Livelihood Entrepreneurship Development (SLED) Programme.

Representing the village of Mururanau located in Deep South Rupununi was Village Councillor Bedanie Charles, who noted the minibus will assist greatly in the transportation of villagers. “Our community is very appreciative for this minibus. It will assist us greatly, and we do not doubt that the lives of our people will improve. This government has shown an interest in us, and we will never forget that.”

Accepting the canter truck, from Minister Ally, for the township of Lethem and its surrounding communities was the founder and President of Guyana Hearts United Group, Norma Griffith.

She noted that her charitable organisation is geared towards uplifting people’s lives and the government has played a major role through the donation of the canter.

“The Organisation, Guyana Hearts United Group consists of volunteers who genuinely have a passion for people and improving their lives. We travel across the Rupununi bringing betterment to people in all forms. This government has recognised our work and is very supportive. We are extremely grateful for this canter. It will assist us in transporting goods and services to the vulnerable and further develop Region Nine,” Griffith noted.

Care packages were also distributed to all in attendance and a grand endorsement for the Coalition Government was expressed in cultural presentations just before the meeting ended.
