Communities Ministry delivers to Reg. 8
– donates tractor to Kato Secondary

The donation of a brand-new tractor to Kato Secondary School will go a long way in making life easier for the students there.
On Friday, Minister of Communities, Hon. Ronald Bulkan handed over the tractor to Region 8’s Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mitzy Campbell who presented the keys to the Regional Education Officer (REDO), Penelope Mackintosh.
Mackintosh explained that the tractor was specifically requested for Kato Secondary – one of the largest dormitory schools in the country – to assist in the transportation of dietary and school supplies from the airstrip. She noted that this type of vehicle was most suited for the terrain. It will also be used to transport children from the nearby villages that do not live in the dormitory.
The REDO further added that “we are rearing the giant black chickens and when we have to transport their feed the tractor will come in handy. Kato Secondary has a vibrant agricultural programme and the tractor will play a pivotal role in aiding the programme. It will help with our agriculture programme in school because we have a plough so we can detach the trailer and use that when we need to plough the land,” she explained
According to Mackintosh, the school is progressing well. When it first opened, it housed a total of 295 students from Grades seven to eight. Today, 445 students are accessing quality education from Grades seven to ten. The only difficulty, according to the REDO, is attracting more teachers so that the school can carry out a full programme.
Additionally, on Friday, Senior Councillors from, Region 9 received a brush cutter and chainsaw respectively. Minister Bulkan handed over the equipment to Carlos Francis of Karasabai and Joseph Dorrick of Quatata.
