Cosmetology Network of Guyana to promote standards in local beauty shops

DPI, Guyana, Friday, April 06, 2018

Several local cosmetologists from across Guyana, to launch the Cosmetology Network of Guyana, with the aim of promoting and fostering standards in local beauty parlours.

American Cosmetology Consultant, Rob Willis.

The newly formed association was established by the entrepreneurs of the Small Business Bureau (SBB) Micro-cosmetology 2018 course. President of Cosmetology Network of Guyana, Michele Washington said she believes the group will transform the way cosmetologists are viewed in the eyes of the public.

“I want them to see us differently, see us as hardworking people and not see us as school dropouts who just want to do something. I want them to see us on as professionals,” Washington said this transformation can be made possible with the adherence of standards by the local beauty shops and with the government’s continued support of small businesses.

Member of the organisation, Tiffany Moriah explained the network has formulated several objectives and standards to be achieved and maintained. She said the name of the organisation was chosen with the intent of attracting “other cosmetologists on board so that we can take Guyana from one level to another”.

Additionally, with efforts to promote standards in the beauty arena in Guyana, American Cosmetology Consultant, Rob Willis, in collaboration with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), redrafted the local Cosmetology Code of Standards.

Willis explained that the previous Cosmetology Code of Standards under the GNBS needed restructuring since it was crafted in 1997. He believes the restructured code will better suit beauty shops of today in an ever-expanding cosmetology environment.

Willis said, “I put together a structure called the Bureau of Licensing and Regulations for Guyana, which in turn will make room for new job opportunities. There will be an inspector”.

He added “a person that goes to a salon and can inspect for sanitation and sterilisation, inspect for current licensing and things of that nature. That way the safety of the people in Guyana will be protected and there will be less liability.”

The Guyana Cosmetology Code of Standards has been put in place to manage the local beauty industry, particularly with the rise of makeup artists, hairdressers, barbers, beauty consultants, among others.

In February 2018, SBB brought in American Cosmetology Consultant, Rob Willis to facilitate a three-month Micro-cosmetology programme to benefit local cosmetologists.
