COVID-19 vaccines are for every eligible adult in Guyana -Minister Anthony

-100 vaccination sites open daily

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony is assuring the population that all COVID-19 vaccines in Guyana are being offered to all eligible adults.

The Minister was responding to queries about employees of Caribbean Airlines accessing vaccines locally. Minister Anthony said the Government has an open policy when it comes to vaccinating persons here against COVID-19.

“We don’t check to see which nationality you are before you could get a vaccine, and so our policy has been very open, and I think a number of Caribbean nationals here in Guyana benefited from the vaccination programme. For us to achieve herd immunity, it means that the people who are here should get vaccinated.

And so, if they’re residing in Guyana, we don’t have a problem giving them the vaccine. We did receive a letter from the airlines to ask us whether or not we can assist with vaccination of their staff, and we agreed. So, we have been working, when the staff can come into one of our vaccination sites, we provide the vaccines for them.

To date, 228, 337 or 46.9 per cent of eligible adults in Guyana have taken their first COVID-19 vaccine, while 99,764 or 20.5 per cent have been fully vaccinated against the disease.  Minister Anthony said Guyana still has a long way to go, as 46.9 per cent vaccination is average.

“So, we have quite a lot work more to do to get people to take their vaccines,” he said.

There are about 100 vaccination sites operating daily countrywide.

Minister Anthony noted that there has been a decline in vaccination in some areas, which he said could be due to several factors, including the current flooding. The Minister advises eligible persons to utilise the services of all vaccination centres. He said the East La Penitence site at Cemetery Road has been relocated to the Umana Yana in Kingston for convenience and easy access.
