― Canal No. 2 Sports Club benefit from donation

Cricket lovey cricket!  The pastime of playing cricket is a fixture in most communities across Guyana. As such, the Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport continues to promote and boost cricket development.

Today, the Minister of Social Cohesion, Hon. Dr. George Norton donated a quantity of cricket gear and equipment to Canal No. 2 Sports Club. Among the items donated were batting gloves, batting leg guards, thigh pads, balls and uniforms.

Secretary of the club, Tejpaul Persaud commended the minister and his team for the donation. “I am glad that Minister Norton was able to visit us as promised and donated much-deserved gear and equipment so that our club can benefit from… while we are not only looking to strengthen the potential we have right now in the community, we are also looking at the youths residing at nearby communities.”

The club Secretary made an additional request for assistance to rehabilitate the club’s pavilion, complete the fencing and placement of a coach to which the minister agreed.

“With a coach on our side along with the insight from our experiences, this will push the development of youths to the forefront; opening them up to more opportunities,” Persaud noted.

Minister Norton commended the members for the work they have done in the management and operation of the sports club.

“I recognise that you are helping yourselves which is commendable… you are independent and I hope that you continue in this vein and that we can collaborate much more, moving forward,” he said.

In 2006, the Canal No. 2 Polder’s Sports Club facility was commissioned, however, due to poor maintenance, it was closed until its resuscitation in 2016. Besides cricket, it also offers table tennis, volleyball and even gym services.

The club has been invited to play in the St. Kitts’ Independence Match next year. They are scheduled to leave on May 1 and return June 1, 2020.
