DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, October 31, 2018

The present state of Guyana’s economy is proof that it was supported, in part, by the illegal narcotics trade. This was expressed today at a press briefing by Finance Minister Winston Jordan, prior to the 98th Sitting of the National Assembly.

Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan.

This came in response to previous statements made by the minister, where he expressed similar sentiments. He noted that he named no specific entities in his initial statement but reminded that years ago, the Opposition’s Chief Whip Gail Teixeira, then a serving Home Affairs Minister, voiced her own concerns about the influx of the drug trade and remarked that she took a decision not to shop at certain businesses suspected to funded, by ill-gotten gains.

Prior to his statement, the minister was asked by the Private Sector Commission and the Georgetown Chambers of Commerce, last week, to provide evidence of same.

Reiterating that a significant section of the economy was supported by those in the illegal drug trade, Minister Jordan said, “Who the cap fits let them wear it!”

The capture and pending extradition to the United States of a popular local businessman and hotelier, in Jamaica according to official sources is the tip of the Iceberg, as more indictments are expected to follow soon. Since taking offices, the Guyana Revenue Authority has pursued many errant taxpayers and is taking a closer look at many multimillion dollars businesses which suddenly sprung up over the past decade.
