Curriculum Review ongoing – ICT and patriotic education new proposals

Georgetown, GINA, June 10, 2016

A review of the national school’s curriculum is currently ongoing and it will focus on patriotic education and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among other proposals. This was disclosed to GINA by the Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine.

Dr. Roopnaraine expressed the view that patriotic education should be taught in schools as it would give students a sense of national pride and patriotism.

He acknowledged that (ICT) is the direction in which the world is moving and Guyana’s education system should also fall in line.

“We have to cultivate patriotic education children so they come out of school with a feeling of Guyana and I want to see much more of that in the school system,” Dr. Roopnaraine said, adding, “we’ve had a look at how the curriculum is working and see what adjustments we need to make to bring the curriculum in line with what I can think of as modern development especially in the area of ICT.”

Minister Roopnaraine noted that education is a constantly evolving process and for a nation like Guyana to advance socially, economically and politically, its education system will have to rise to the challenges.

“I would like to ensure that we get the curriculum review completed and the reforms that are needed within it, this year, I can’t tell you what month in this year but we are working on it and I am hoping that by the end of the year we will be in a position to implement new proposals in relation to the curriculum,” Dr. Roopnaraine said.

The curriculum review will also focus on revamping the overall academic system. This will see an improved and modernized system, especially in the fields of technology and science. This, the Minster expects, will in turn result in well-rounded individuals.
