DPI, Guyana, Monday, April 16, 2018

Students from the Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI), particularly in the business stream, were advised by the Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin to focus on the developmental needs of their region.

Minister of Business, Dominic Gaskin addressing the business students of the Essequibo Technical Institute (ETI).

During a visit to Anna Regina on April 12, the Business Minister engaged the students at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office. While the institution’s curriculum reflects the developmental needs of the country, Minister Gaskin said it should also mirror the changing needs of the region.

“It does not make sense to educate you on things that will just take you out of the region. Education has a purpose and its purpose is to aid in national development.  And since there is an institution in the region, it should focus on the needs of the region as well.”

Additionally, the minister expressed the need to see more business students leaving school with the knowledge and principles of managing their own businesses.

While education does not fall under the portfolio of the minister, any recommendation from the technical institution would be welcomed, especially as it relates to enhancement of the business curriculum in Region Two.

The ETI, located in Anna Regina, is an educational institution which offers education and training programmes in Business Management, Carpentry & Joinery and Commerce, Radio and Electronics servicing, Competency-Based Education and Training (CBE) in the Data Operations discipline, Furniture Making and Welding, to name a few.
