DCYS receives Prado from UNFPA for enhancement of the Youth Friendly Spaces project

 

(Georgetown, June 17, 2016) – The Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport has a long relationship with the United Nations Population Fund which saw the development of Youth Friendly Spaces around the country. This relationship was today strengthened with the presentation of a Toyota Prado which will be used by the Department of Youth.

Having received the key for the vehicle, the Minister within the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon., Nicolette Henry emphasized that the vehicle will certainly boost support to the Youth Friendly Spaces.

Minister Henry highlighted that the Ministry intends to refocus on those spaces so as to ensure the young people have a safe space to meet and have access to key services. In this regard, the Minister expressed her gratitude to the UNFPA for this gesture.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Alfred King noted that the vehicle will further advance the work done for youth. He explained that the creation of the youth friendly space made available a space where youths can learn about themselves and their sexuality. In this regard, the Ministry is pleased with this presentation.

UNFPA Assistant Resident Representative Patrice LaFleur indicated that the UNFPA is happy to continue its relationship with the Ministry. These relations started in 2003.

LaFleur noted that the vehicle will be used in the Department of Youth’s outreach programme to the Youth Friendly Spaces where special attention will be on adolescents and youth development especially adolescent pregnancy reduction.

She added that the UNFPA has a mandate from the United Nations and the Caricom Secretariat to address adolescent pregnancy reduction.
