Delivery of quality healthcare boosted at Mabaruma Reg. Hospital

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, September 19, 2018

Mabaruma Regional Hospital has been making many strides over the years to improve its service delivery to residents in the new town as well as those in surrounding areas. After a follow-up visit to the health facility on Tuesday, Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, welcomed the report of good healthcare being delivered.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Vishal Ramjas noted that for some time Mabaruma Regional Hospital has been operating as a district hospital but the service delivery has been up to the standard of a regional facility.

“It’s a work in progress, we would have transitioned from a district hospital and now moved to a regional hospital… as we have considered it, developments are still in its embryonic stage, there are improvements that can be done”, the MS explained.

At this health facility, a secondary level of service is offered where general surgeries are being done. Specialised services offered including obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine and paediatrics.

There has been the addition of more doctors and GMOs to offset the increased patient load even as the region’s population has been increased due to the movement of migrants along the Region One border, Guyana shares with neighbouring Venezuela.

While these improvements are celebrated, the health facility’s staff met with Minister Cummings to discuss further improvement of its services. Accompanying Minister Cummings was Personnel Officer II from the Ministry’s Personnel department Vishnu Tularam and Health Coordinator, Indigenous Peoples’ Communities, MOPH, Michael Gouveia

It was noted that there is the need for more human resources and capacity building and training opportunities for staff.

Minister Cummings regarded some directly related issues falling under the categories as “low-hanging fruits”. She indicated that there needs to be a clear line of communication between the regional administration, responsible for the hospital’s management, and the Ministry of Public Health. The minister said, “I’ve visited here before and since then I continue to see vast improvements and I am very pleased but I know you have challenges and we don’t want any challenges to stand between us and the delivery of quality healthcare

This is one of several visits to the hospital made by the junior public health minister.
