Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation Donates GYD $2M Hurricane Relief Fund

A team inclusive of the Managing Director of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation visited the office of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on September 19, 2019 and donated GYD$2,000,000 to the Hurricane Relief Fund.

Upon handing over the check, Mr. Rawston Adams, General Manager of the Corporation related that the company is very saddened by the extent of the devastation resulting from the impact of Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas. Mr. Adams related that in support the national relief efforts, the staff of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation collectively decided to take a significant portion of the funds allocated to their 2019 Christmas Social, and put it towards humanitarian aid for the people of the Bahamas, whose lives have been affected.

Subsequent to the impact of the Category 5 Hurricane, the Civil Defence Commission activated a national public/private partnership arrangement to raise funds not only for the people of the Bahamas, but also for islands likely to be affected by hurricanes since the hurricane season is still in effect.  Hurricane Dorian referred to as unpredictable and unprecedented in nature, blasted the north-western Bahamas islands for an approximate total of 68 hours, with the Southern eye-wall planted over Grand Bahama for about 30 hours with sustained winds of 185 mph with gusts of up to 220 mph. To date, thirteen hundred (1,300) persons remain missing.

The Director-General, Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig thanked the General Manager and his team for the gesture from his corporation.
