“Democracy has prevailed”
─ members of the diplomatic corps, special invitees ecstatic at inauguration of Guyana’s 9th Executive President

The National Cultural Centre (NCC) came alive for the Inauguration Ceremony of Guyana’s 9th Executive President, His Excellency, Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
The atmosphere was buzzing as government officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps and special invitees arrived to be part of the historic event.
Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), Canadian High Commissioner, Lilian Chatterjee expressed satisfaction to be a part of the day’s proceedings. According to her, President Ali’s “speech was that of unity and optimism for the future.”
“Democracy prevailed, the will of the people was respected in the end, and I am so happy for Guyana and optimistic for its future so that all citizens of Guyana can benefit,” she said.
High Commissioner Chatterjee also noted the presence of the Surinamese and CARICOM delegation, stating that “it was very encouraging to see the President of Suriname and CARICOM represented as it shows that everybody in the whole world has optimism for Guyana’s future.”
Additionally, GECOM Commissioner, Sase Gunraj echoed similar sentiments noting that democracy and the will of the people have prevailed, and focus must now be placed on the country’s development.
“The hustings are now over. Development for the benefit of all Guyanese is what the focus is, and everyone should be on board with that,” Gunraj said.
UNICEF Deputy Representative, Irfan Akhtar commended Guyana’s 9th Executive President on his vision to take the country forward.
“From the UN side, we believe we need to collaborate and support the implementation of his vision,” Akhtar stated further highlighting the statements made by H.E Dr. Ali on youth empowerment and committed to strengthening UNICEF’s relationship with Guyana.
Several other special invitees expressed satisfaction to be part of the event with many of them stating that the ceremony is a celebration of Guyana’s democracy.
His Excellency, Mohamed Irfaan Ali was sworn in as Guyana’s 9th Executive President on Sunday, August 2, 2020, after Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission declared the People’s Progressive Party Civic as the winner for the March 2 General and Regional Elections.
