Den Amstel plants “tree of love”

 The residents of Den Amstel have planted a symbolic “tree of love” as a show of unity in the West Coast Demerara community.

The activity, which also saw the lighting of the first community Christmas tree, was organised by the cultural group the Den Amstel Dynamic Network.

Chairperson Sandrene McKind said, “The planting of this tree is to demonstrate the love for our community and by extension our country.”

Delivering the feature address, Regional Executive Officer Jennifer Ferreira-Dougall focused on the need for accord in the community.

“There are three major celebrations in our country where we embrace each other, and those are Mashramani, Cricket and Christmas.

If we can embrace each other for 365 days of the year, that would be better. That will guarantee real growth in our community and by extension our country.”

She charged the residents to put aside all negativity and “embrace unity.”

Community stalwart 74-year-old Yolan Felix was the honouree of the evening receiving a holiday hamper from the REO.

Felix, a teacher for all of her adult life, is known for being a disciplinarian and imparting good morals to the younger community members. The hamper was donated by Director-General of Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon.

The village children also received toys. The event ended with a cultural presentation showcasing the talents of the villagers.
