Department of Education Region 1 Launches Youth Week

Addressing Headteachers and students from schools in the Mabaruma Sub Region on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the Regional Education Officer Mr. Nigel Richards said, “Young people are an important part of our society, the Department of Education will continue to provide opportunities for youths to develop their potentials to the fullest”.

A special Opening Ceremony for Headteachers meeting was hosted by students across the three Sub Regions. This was followed by a Youth Leadership Symposium that engaged the students and exposed them to topics that included career choices, positive discipline, leadership and cultural humility.

In opening the Symposium, Regional Chairman Mr. Brentnol Ashley commended the Department of Education for the initiative and encouraged the young people to learn as much as they can since they are the ones who will one day assume leadership roles in their town, villages and communities.

The Department of Education joined with over 100 students from across the region to observe the beginning of Youth Week 2018. These activities also formed part of the Region’s schedule of activities for Independence Week which began on Sunday, May 21, 2018.
