Desilting of drains in Alexander Village alleviating flooding

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, January 21, 2020

The Georgetown Mayor and City Council is currently engaged in a massive desilting exercise of the drains in Alexander Village and residents are already experiencing the benefits.

The ongoing $4Million desilting exercise which encompasses Hunter Street to the Public Road in the community is being carried out by contractor and resident of the community Quessie Hamilton.

“We are desilting and cleaning all the areas that are blocking the water flow because First Street is a street known to flood. Residents are already seeing an improvement because it rained overnight and there is not much water settled on the road,” he explained.

According to Hamilton, the work should be completed in two weeks. The contractor who grew up in the community said that he was happy to have been awarded the project and pledged to execute a thorough job to stop the flooding in the community

Mayor of Georgetown His Worship Ubraj Narine visited the area on Tuesday to assess the ongoing works. He told DPI that during a prior visit to the area the Minister of Communities had committed to providing funds for the resident councillors to execute the much-needed desilting of the drains however the money was recently released.

“…I can assure the residents of Alexander Village, the Honourable Minister Ronald Bulkan kept his word,” Mayor Narine said. “I must say passing through Alexander Village I can see that the residents are very happy with the ongoing work,” he added.

Councillor for the community Yvonne Ferguson explained that last year, drainage works were carried out in the community however residents still experienced some flooding. However, with the current desilting exercise, this will be a thing of the past

Similar exercises are expected to be carried out in Constituencies one, 14 and 15 in the coming weeks.
