As the time draws nearer for the presentation of the 2019 National Budget, the Director of Sport, Christopher Jones is reminding the various sporting associations to submit their proposals.

Director of Sport, Christopher Jones.

In an interview with the Department of Public Information, the Director said five of 42 sporting associations have submitted their proposals thus far.

“We would have written to them in the month of July, requesting the information for 2019; just a few associations have responded and those responses will now form part of our request to the National Budget” Jones stated.

The Sports Director explained the tardy response could affect athletes. “There are the athletes, who could otherwise lose an opportunity represent us regionally and internationally. However, we hope by putting the information out there, it allows the athletes or the various clubs to make informed decisions.”

Jones described the sporting bodies’ proposals as crucial to the national budget’s crafting.

“The national budget cannot be treated as something as simple. The national budget is the nation purse, the taxes are garnered from all across the country and prioritised in terms of public health, education, infrastructure. This is where the funds are allocated and unless you make a request for it, you cannot access it” Jones underscored.
