Easter holiday weekend to be observed indoors

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 9, 2020

Easter 2020 will be much different than previous years because the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has changed plans for social activities.

In light of the emergency orders implemented to safeguard public health, churches throughout Guyana are adapting their mode of service.

According to Dr. Wilbert Lee, an Associate Pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, modern technology will dictate how the religious holiday is observed.

“The celebration this year we will do virtually because we want to obey and honour the law of the land that speaks to social distancing and the fact that we can only have ten persons assembled,” Dr. Lee told DPI.

“While Christians of our fellowship will remain home, we will do live streaming so that they can be a part of the fellowship and the celebration,” Dr. Lee added.

For many persons, the Easter weekend will take a shift from the popular kite-flying activities held at community grounds, beaches, and seawalls around the country. Bartica Regatta and Rupununi Rodeo have halted as well.

Sharing their plans for the Easter period was Roberta Ferguson who noted her family will adhere to advisories on social distancing and instead spend Easter indoors.

Roberta explained, “we will be home. The most we are doing is some cooking and that’s about it. This is the first Easter in a long time and Good Friday we are going to be home the entire weekend.”

“We had many activities in the past, but I think during this time is very necessary especially for someone who interacts a lot with the elderly [to practice social distancing],” Roberta further added.

Another citizen, Bertram Sandiford, said his plans are simple and would revolve around his job and his residence. “I’m working on Easter day. From work, back home and locked in and not to come out back on the road,” stated Bertram.

Easter is one of the highpoints on the Christian calendar that signifies the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
