DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, February 5, 2020

Annandale Secondary, Charlestown Secondary, Desrey Fox Secondary, and  McKenzie High are the recipients of football gear from the Ministry of Education.

At Wednesday’s handover, education minister, the Hon. Dr. Nicolette Henry said the students’ holistic development was important to the government. She added that while academics were crucial, it was essential to have a balance with sports.

“While this may appear on the face of it to be a very simple ceremony, it is very important ceremony in line with the government’s goal and agenda to ensure that every child in this country irrespective of where he or she lives, reach their full potential,” Dr. Henry said.

She added that healthy lifestyles, good morals, and discipline were also significant factors in that holistic development.

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Cohesion, Hon. Dr. George Norton said that the donation was another investment in the development of sports in Guyana.

“In addition to our new synthetic tracks being constructed in Berbice and Linden, we have also invested heavily and will continue to invest in the development of sports grounds and playfields in almost every community. We want to ensure that our children and youths have the facilities they need to not only be physically active and have fun but to also prepare and practice for competitions that will provide them in their future aspirations along the line of professional sports,” Minister Norton stated.

President of the Guyana Football Federation Wayne Forde making brief remarks said although the school environment is centred around academics, mixing it with sports will create a well-rounded individual.

He added that the government had been a critical partner in football development.
