Beterverwagting latest community to be visited

―Parents praise Ministry initiatives

―Hundreds pour in to engage Ministry officials

―Minister calls for greater parental support

DPI, Guyana, Friday, March 8, 2019

Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry yesterday stressed the importance of parent involvement as the Ministry continues its engagements with parents of Grade Six students. This timely call comes just weeks away from the National Grade Six Assessment slated for April 17 and 18, 2019.

The Ministry has embarked on a widespread outreach in several communities in its bid to ensure all students have maximum support and are afforded equitable educational opportunities in wake of the examinations.

Over 450 parents attended the engagement held at the Beterverwagting Quamina Primary School on March 7, to work with education officials in finding solutions to problems facing parents and students.

Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry told parents and guardians that the Ministry is listening and acting.

“It is really important to have the communities and parents involved in their children’s education. We want to ensure that each generation that comes behind you is better prepared and so we must put in the hard work collectively, all of us, not only the minister because she’s the politician. While I serve as a politician, I am also a parent, I am a mother and I’m a member of the community and so I understand the realities and the constraints that we face each day,” Dr. Henry explained.

Parents were also in high praise of the initiatives developed by the Ministry to improve student performance over the last few years.

This is the fourth round of engagements with parents as the Ministry continues in its mission aimed at increasing parental support and involvement for students slated to write the NGSA this April.

Previous sessions were recently held in the Matarkai sub-district, North Georgetown district, in the Corentyne and in New Amsterdam.
