– “…as educators, we have to adopt that attitude where we must see every child as being capable of fulfilling potential and we have the responsibility to build capacity in those children since every child can learn; every child must learn”CEO Marcel Hutson

Chief Education Officer Marcel Hutson is urging educators to adopt a mindset that takes into consideration the ongoing overhaul of the education system.

“I believe as part of fixing the education system, we, the educators and facilitators must develop a curriculum that is amiable so that our children can quickly grasp and thereby fulfil their potential,” Hutson said.

He was at the time addressing the opening of a three-day Curriculum Writing workshop hosted by the Guyana Education Sector Improvement Project (GESIP) at the Regency Hotel.

The Chief Education Officer called on the participants to be bold and experimental in their approach to crafting the curriculum in order to have a “product that will see Guyana moving forward…that will see all of our children fulfilling their potential because every child can learn and must learn.”

According to Hutson, systems are built and improved when stakeholders have the mindset to assist the development process. This approach he said, is needed for the local education system to move forward.

“We have to change the way that we operate, the way we look at education we must be facilitators and creators of learning and therefore we have to see ourselves as facilitators… therefore, when we complete our job, people will fulfil their potential and rise above the fray,” the CEO said.

The objectives of this session are to acquaint curriculum writers with a syllabus framework, introduce the writers to the curriculum writing process and to develop a detailed writing schedule for the nursery, primary and early secondary levels which includes subject integration.

The workshop is being facilitated by Mind Bloom Consulting, a Canadian company in collaboration with the St Francis Xavier University of Canada.

Launched in 2017, the five-year GESIP which is funded by World Bank at a cost of over $2.9Billion (US$14.3Million) aims to re-engineer the education sector in Guyana from Nursery to University and improve the quality of education nationwide.
