Eight GCAA officers to benefit from training in Jamaica

Georgetown, GINA, July 22, 2016

Eight Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) officers will be attending a three-month training programme hosted by the Jamaican Civil Aviation Authority Institute (JCAAI) in Kingston, Jamaica.

The training will be conducted during the period July to November.

This training has become necessary so as to enable GCAA to fulfill its mandate, to provide quality air navigation and air traffic services within Guyana’s airspace on a 24-hour basis.

During a post-Cabinet press briefing on Thursday, Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman explained that a number of factors have contributed to the need for additional staff, and enhanced training in air traffic control and air navigation skills.

These factors, Minister Trotman said; include the increase in the number of movements in Guyana’s airspace, the evolution of the Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle, and the need for supervisory staff at each control facility to reduce errors.

The JCAAI has been requested to conduct the training because of the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which says that training in air traffic control must be conducted and approved by an international training institution, which Jamaica has.

Minister Trotman noted that the Guyana Air Navigation Services Training School has been training staff, but is yet to attain the requisite approved training organisation status. That process, he said, is ongoing to ensure that the local institute is certified.
