Elderly citizen receives new wheelchair

DPI, Guyana, Monday, January 14, 2019

In the Ministry of Social Protection’s bid to care and protect senior citizens, it gifted a brand-new wheelchair to another elderly person, Iyona Smith.

Smith, who is 83 years old, today received her much-needed wheelchair from the Ministry of Social Protection. The woman was dependent on her family members whenever she had to be moved from place to place.

Her son, Leslie Vanooten who received the wheelchair on behalf of his mother expressed appreciation to the ministry for the easing the hardship for his mother, who is presently a ‘shut-in’ patient.

Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally said that the ministry is committed to ensuring that every senior citizen gets their needs met.

“Our seniors had contributed magnificently to Guyana’s Foundation and we must be able to give back and ensure that each one of them receives whatever opportunities are available,” Minister Ally said.

The Ministry of Social Protection has previously provided several wheelchairs to individuals and organizations in keeping with its mandate to deliver a comfortable life for all senior citizens countrywide.
