DPI, Guyana, Friday, January 18, 2019

Twenty-year-old chutney semi-finalist, Chandrapaul Nathoo is excited for others to listen to his song, ‘Mash 49’, which depicts the country’s melting pot.

Chandrapaul Nathoo, a 20-year-old Chuntey semi-finalist.

Speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Nathoo said that he decided to join the competition since it is a critical and vital way of highlighting and depicting the various cultures of Guyana. Music, he stressed, can be used as a tool to highlight what should be important to the people residing in Guyana.

“Mash 49 is considered patriotic; it is cultural; it represents the people of Guyana more so as we celebrate Mashramani this year we need to give credit and rise to the occasion and that is the reason I composed the song ‘Mash 49’ under the theme Mash 49 with Victory in Mind,” the semi-finalist explained.

He noted that the song starts off, with the 2019 theme for Mashramani which quickly changes to describe the Indigenous Peoples, East Indian and Africans among others. It can be heard in English as well as Hindi.

Nathoo hopes that all interested will come out and support the competition and make it the biggest event compared to previous years. He will be part of the artistes line up for the Chutney Rehearsals set for the bandstand, Kingston Seawalls on January 27.

Fans will also be able to see him perform onstage during the Duck Curry and Chutney Extravaganza Song Competition Final set to be held on February 17 at Anna Regina Community Centre.
