Emergency works for Leguan Stelling underway

DPI, GUYANA, Monday, August 07, 2017

Emergency repair works will soon commence on the Leguan Stelling in Region Two, Essequibo Islands. Structural emergency works will be conducted with emergency funding before the end of the year, while full rehabilitation will be budgeted for in the Ministry’s 2018 budget. This was confirmed to the Department of Public Information (DPI) by Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson

Two months ago, reports surfaced in the media that several piles supporting the Leguan Stelling were rotting and boat operators and motorists were calling on the authorities to fix them.

According to Minister Patterson some of the findings in the preliminary report submitted, revealed that indeed some of the piles had deteriorated, though not to the extent to jeopardize the wharf.  He added that there is also much erosion of the metal strips and the need for some braces.

“While it is not structurally unsafe it gives the impression that the stelling is swaying under the weight so we have decided that we will put in some braces. We are looking at all of those and a lot of the boards at the stelling are loose, those we will do this year,” Minister Patterson explained.

The Public Infrastructure, Minister noted that some remedial works to the breakwaters (structures constructed along coastlines as part of coastal defense or to protect an anchorage from the effects of both weather and long shore drift) and other rehabilitation works will also be carried out in the region in 2018.
