David Dutchin, a resident of Lovely Lass is one of the many persons who have seen the trajectory of their lives take a turn for the better after having benefitted from empowerment programmes being made available.

Dutchin shared his story, at a meeting held at the Groden Nursery School, with residents of Lovely Lass Village, which is located on the West Coast Berbice (WCB), on Friday evening.

The father of one said he was trained in the field of Apiculture by Food for the Poor Guyana Incorporated (FFTP) in 2017. He relayed too that his son, Davidson Dutchin, who attends the Fort Wellington Secondary School, is now certified by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) in the same discipline.

According to Dutchin, life for his family has become much easier after both himself and son had acquired the knowledge through the opportunities provided.

Partners from America and students from the Guyana School of Agriculture visited our apery and advised us how to make our business even more successful,” the Senior Dutchin relayed.

“Right now, my life is at a better [stage] and I must say thanks to the government for providing my son with the opportunity to be certified as an apiculture farmer. As a father, I am supporting him 100%, and I hope when he finishes school, he will be able to work with the Ministry of Agriculture,” he said happily while displaying his son’s certificate at the meeting.

The Friday meeting was facilitated by Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Jennifer Wade, Vice Chairman of the Union/Naarstigheid Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), Vinceroy Jordan, and representative of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Janice White.

Residents were reminded of the many successes which occurred in the Mahaica-Berbice Region over the last four years.

Chairman Jordan said primary drains in the region are being cleared, citing that presently a machine is working in the community of Golden Grove. It was also disclosed that a brand-new Fire Station Outpost was established, which will provide services to residents across Region 5. Additionally, $7.5M was expended on the community centre; this project saw, among other things, the rehabilitation of the fence, and the installation of a new bleacher and washroom facilities.

Chairman Jordan noted that under the APNU+AFC Government, Guyana is moving constantly forward.

The officiating team of government officials were able to make note of the issues raised and assured that it would be conveyed to the relevant authorities. Among the concerns raised is the need for 24-hour water service and a water treatment plant. Also, the swimming pool located at the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary – Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) was in the pipeline to receive rehabilitation, to allow for youngsters to have recreational opportunities.
