Essay competition for World Maritime Day celebrations

World Maritime Day will be celebrated on September 24, 2020 under the theme “Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet.” This year’s theme was designed by the International Maritime Organization to raise awareness of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and to showcase the work that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its member states are undertaking to achieve targets. These goals are as relevant as ever, to showcase that shipping is essential for sustainable development.

In this regard, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has organized an essay competition in keeping with this year’s theme.

The competition is specifically targeted for students who are between the ages, 14-18yrs old, and who are part of a recognized educational institution.

While the theme’s focus is on the importance of shipping and the preservation of the environment, the specific research topic highlights how to make ships and their operations more environmentally friendly.

Awards will be presented to the top three students who are able to compose the best essay on the specific research topic.

Prizes include a laptop computer, a tablet and a school hamper for the winners of the competition.

World Maritime Day is celebrated at the IMO Headquarters and among the member states yearly in the month of September. The day is used to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment, also to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO’s work.

Please see the poster attached with additional details regarding the essay competition.
