Extra security for the season

―Police Force doubles up on security in key city areas

DPI, Guyana, Friday, December 27, 2019

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has extended its heightened holiday scrutiny in the city beyond the confines of central Georgetown.

Senior Superintendent Rabinranauth Boodram told DPI that more ranks have been deployed to key business areas in Region 4’s A Division (Cummings Lodge to Agricola/ Industry to Mahaica/Eccles to Dora).

“From the 15th of November to the 15th of January, we would normally beef up security in Georgetown, around Stabroek Market and the parks. We have extended this year, and we have gone to Giftland and James Street Albouystown.”

Boodram said there are 17 booths in strategic locations around Georgetown which are supported by armed roving foot patrols who are also equipped with radios and body cameras.

“They could record the incident and they we could see the persons involved, and we could start investigations from there. So far, we have 80 ranks during the day and 50 on patrol during the night. That entails vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, beats and boots,” Boodram said.

According to the senior officer, the force has also deployed undercover ranks, and several canine patrols are on duty during the evenings. Patrol vehicles have been stationed close to nightspots to not only ensure security but also to conduct breathalyser tests to curb drink driving incidents.

Persons are urged to cooperate with all ranks if instructed to do so and take measures to ensure their safety and security.
