ExxonMobil Foundation plugs US$10M in education, conservation

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Conservational International (CI) and the University of Guyana (UG) will be teaming up to deliver environmental innovation and sustainable projects through a US$10M investment from ExxonMobil Foundation.

A release issued yesterday by ExxonMobil noted that Conservation International is the grantee and the University of Guyana is the beneficiary. It is anticipated that training will be focused on environmental innovation and sustainability, and entrepreneurship in nature-based sectors.

Conservational International’s local subsidiary, Conservation International Guyana and UG will train Guyanese for sustainable job opportunities and expand community-supported conservation.

Conservational International Guyana will conduct a feasibility study to define the details of the programme. President of the ExxonMobil Foundation, Kevin Murphy, said the partnership will support the highest conservation priorities.

“It reinforces the government’s objectives as outlined in its Green State Development Strategy and demonstrates the value we place on our long-term relationship with the citizens of Guyana,” Murphy added.

The five-year investment is also intended to expand conservation areas in the Rupununi Wetlands, aid mangrove restoration and management and support improvements to community-based fishing on Guyana’s coast. It will also support the work of the University of Guyana’s Greening Research and Innovation Centres.
