Georgetown, Guyana (February 22, 2018) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, last evening, attended a lecture at the University of Guyana (UG) held to observe International Mother Language Day. The event, which was hosted in UG’s Education Lecture Theatre, was coordinated by Lecturer in the Language and Culture Department, Ms. Charlene Wilkinson.

International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance held to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on November 17,1999 and was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.

This is the first year that observances are being held in Guyana and the focus is being placed on Guyanese Creole and Indigenous languages Arawak, Akwaio, Carib, Macushi, Patamona, Wai Wai, Wapichan and Warrau.

First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger pays keen attention as Story teller, Mr. Michael Khan describes how each item was used as a representative of the host looks on.
