First Lady comforts grieving mum from Aruka River accident 

Georgetown, Guyana – (September 2, 2016) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, today, offered words of comfort and support to grieving Ms. Ophelia James, who lost two children in an accident on the Aruka River on the evening of Thursday, August 25.

First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger comforts Ms. Ophelia James during a visit with her, this morning, at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Ms. James is currently an in-patient of the Female Surgical Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) nursing serval injuries, including two broken ribs, a fractured shoulder blade and punctured left lung, following the collision. The First Lady extended condolences to Ms. James on the death of her two children and spent several quiet moments speaking with her. The attending physician also updated the First Lady on the woman’s prognosis.

First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger helps the attending physician and another visitor to ease Ms. Ophelia James into a more comfortable position on her bed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Ms. James and her family, including her husband Mr. Basil DaSilva and their children, nine-year-old Loyzal DaSilva, seven-year-old Daveannand James and an older sibling, of Central Kumaka, were sailing home when a boat hit theirs from behind, causing it to capsize and tossing them into the river. The younger children perished, while the eldest and their parents managed to swim to safety. Mr. DaSilva escaped with minor injuries and the eldest child is unharmed.

First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger extends wishes for a speedy recovery to Presidential Guard, Constable Jamelle Joseph who a patient in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

Meanwhile, the First Lady also visited Presidential Guard, Constable Jamelle Joseph, who is warded in the same hospital wing as she recovers from minor surgery.
