First youth conference for September

An inaugural National Youth Conference will be held from September 24 to 26 under the theme “Youth Perspective for Empowerment and Development for a Better Guyana.”

The conference, which will be held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre (ACCC), is expected to cater for 300 youths from the ten administrative regions. The first day will involve reception and orientation while the other two days will facilitate discussions and interaction between youths and senior officials in society.

According to Senior Research, Planning and Development Officer of the Department of Youth, Adeti De Jesus, the conference is designed to give youths the opportunity to engage firsthand with the various policymakers and contributors to national development. “The structure of the conference, we are going to have discussions and presentations made by NGOs government agencies and other entities that we consider to be important and can provide the relevant information pertaining to youth-related issues after which we are going to have plenary sessions where young persons will have the opportunity to discuss topics and areas that are important to them.”

Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael-Haynes also added that the conference is for “young people between the ages of 16-35 which is our youth age. We want to ensure that we capture this group of young people to foster participation and inclusion of Guyanese youth.”

While an overwhelming response from youth all across Guyana it will be ensured there is an even distribution of attendees from all ten regions. The department will be providing transportation, meals and accommodation for those travelling to Georgetown from regions outside of Region 4. Those with intentions of attending are asked to secure their spots early by getting registered as soon as possible.

Registration for attendance to the conference is now open and online via the Department of Youth Guyana’s Facebook page or through the website www.youthconferencegy.com.
