Five New Year’s babies grace New Amsterdam Hospital

While many were welcoming the New Year, the doctors and nurses at the New Amsterdam Hospital were kept busy as five babies made their entrance into a new decade.
First-time mother Taramattie Baijnauth was the first to give birth at 02:35hrs to a girl weighing 3.5 kg. Baijnauth of Number 59 Village, East Berbice-Corentyne told DPI, she was not expecting to give birth today but is very happy that the birth was a safe one. A happy and excited Baijnath said she is eager to return home so her family can spend time with their bundle of joy.

The second delivery of the day was to Towana Gravsande 19, of Bush Lot Village West Coast Berbice who gave birth to a boy weighing 2.9 kg. According to the young mother, her due date was a week away however she was both surprised and delighted when she went into to labour this morning. Gravsande’s son was born at 6:40hrs.
Less than three hours later Somwattie Deonat 21, of Number 50 Village delivered her third child, a boy weighing 1 kg 900 grams. Meanwhile, 38-year-old Dianne Gonsalves of Cumberland Village was among the joyful mothers who delivered on the first day of the new year. Another mother who gave birth via Caesarean section was still in recovery when this publication visited.
Medical Superintendent of the New Amsterdam Hospital, Dr. Vasana Henry noted that more babies are expected to be delivered before midnight.
Officials from the Regional Health Services of Region Six will make a presentation of hampers to the mothers on January 2.
