Food for the Poor donates medical items to Public Health Ministry

DPI, Guyana, Monday, July 20, 2020

A cargo container filled with a large donation of medical items from the Food for the Poor Guyana (FFPG) Incorporated was handed over to the Ministry of Public Health on Monday, July 20, 2020.

The sizeable contribution was gathered overseas to support the health ministry in delivering adequate health services and will be distributed to several health facilities throughout the country.

Among the items are needles and syringes of all sizes, blood collection tubes, catheters, Psoriasis topical solution, urine collectors, vacutainers and various tubes.

Receiving the donation Minister of Public Health Hon. Volda Lawrence noted that as the Ministry is without a budget the contribution will boost efforts to ensure all health facilities are adequately supplied.

“These will go a very far way in terms of the services we provide especially given the present financial situation. This is a tremendous help to the health sector as a whole. These items will find their way into all of our hospitals in particular and some into our clinics.” The Minister said.

Minister Lawrence also acknowledged FFPG’s sterling support to the Ministry, noting that despite the pandemic’s effect worldwide, the organisation’s commitment remains outstanding.

FFPG, Field Officer, Compton Giddings said this donation forms part of his organisation’s wider objective of reaching out to communities in need.

“We trust that these items will go to the far-flung areas… we know the Ministry has been paying attention to Regions Nine and Seven so we trust that the items will reach areas where it is much needed,” he said.

The Public Health Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary-Finance, Glendon Fogenay underscored the timeliness of the donation as efforts are being made to ensure health facilities are adequately supplied with essential medical items.

According to the Ministry, the priority areas are Regions One, Four, Seven, Eight and Ten.
