Food for Thought… Self- empowerment, a must!

― bread vendor encourages women to be their own bosses

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, March 6, 2019

“Every day is a battle for us women… We endure a lot and must embed good morals in ourselves and our young daughters who will be tomorrow’s leaders,” said Angela Armstrong, a bread vendor who operates a business inherited from her father at the tender age of sixteen. She can be found providing satisfaction to her clientele daily from 05:00hrs, at Bourda Market

The Department of Public Information (DPI) caught up with Armstrong and sought after her story.

Smiling, Armstrong revealed that her most significant accomplishment is being a mother to three children. Notwithstanding the challenges of being a single parent, Armstrong shared that it gives her great joy to provide shelter, clothing, food and an education for her children. Every morning, she prepares them for school before heading out to Bourda Market.

Speaking to the DPI, as she deftly packed her stand with fresh loaves, Armstrong said that she firmly believes in being her own boss and aspires to one day acquire a larger and better business.

“As a single parent, it is not easy. I work hard to ensure my children have everything they need and become better individuals and make better life decisions. This life is not easy, but you have to be strong and believe in yourself,” Armstrong said.

She advises women like herself to seek avenues to self-empowerment and always hold the belief that they can accomplish whatever they set out to do. Armstrong added that while some young women may face challenges, it is crucial that they find a way out of any hardship.

“We, as women, must be able to provide for our children and getting your own business is a wise step. However, there are challenges we would face as women; men would see you as a competition when managing a business but we as women must stand our ground and stay strong.”
