DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, June 11, 2019

To mark the arrival of the Ghanaian President and his delegation, a two-day Forestry Exhibition was launched at the Umana Yana, showcasing a wide array of locally made wood-products from talented businesses throughout Guyana.

Inspecting the various booths on display was Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon. He noted that the exhibition was organised for the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo and his delegation, here on a state visit.

Director-General Harmon expressed, “I think they [the Ghanaian delegation] have expressed an interest in seeing some of our wood products. In particular, some of the lesser known species. So, what I am seeing here makes me very proud that Guyanese people have actually produced work of this standard using the quality of wood that we have here in Guyana”.

As the event began to attract persons within the vicinity, the Department of Public Information (DPI) visited some of the booths to get a glimpse of the local creative works on display.

Assistant Marketing Manager of the Barama Company Limited, Daniel Jaisingh, promoted the items his company had on display. “Our product is 100% locally manufactured. We produce plywood in various thicknesses and grades for various applications. For example, we have 4.0mm thickness plywood, which is the thinnest plywood, all the way through 18.0mm plywood, which is the thickest”, he boasted

In a durability test, patrons were able to witness how locally produced plywood outperforms those imported.

Iwokarama International Centre was also present with a diverse booth depicting Guyana’s flora and fauna. Community Relations Manager Sabanto Tokoroho noted, “we have the Iwokrama River Lodge here on display and we have a video that is showcasing different aspects of what Iwokrama actually does. And we have of course many booklets for young people, like mammal booklets, bird booklets, posters and also newsletters.”

Athena Little, who was spotted at the event, told DPI, “I like what I’m seeing …it is not all about the wood, but also the local stuff the people have to offer. So, this is very good”.

The Ghanaian head of State and his delegation will visit the exhibition today following a tour of the Demerara Distillers Limited and Banks DIH.
