Today marks the start of Guyana Restaurant Week under the popular theme “Explore. Eat. Repeat.” The twice a year feature event gives patrons a chance to try exceptional Guyanese cuisine from the best restaurants in Guyana.

This year the event will run from June 21-30 with 19 restaurants on board. As is the norm, the dining experience starts as low as $2000 for lunch with dinner ranging between $4000-$5000 depending on location, this includes VAT and service charges where applicable but does not include beverages.

The event was birthed by the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) and has enjoyed the support of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) which was represented by their Deputy Director Carla James who gave some brief remarks at the Guyana Restaurant Week Launch.

“The success of any endeavour is proven in its positive growth, and Guyana Restaurant Week has had great success being one of the most anticipated events on the annual calendar that is showcasing the Guyanese culture and cuisine.  The evidence of the interest can be seen in Google search trends for food, restaurants and Guyana Restaurant Week specifically. We have great food in Guyana so this is no surprise! Although Guyana Restaurant Week pulls influences from all over the world, all meals are prepared with fresh and organic local ingredients.”

With Guyana on the pathway to going green, James further revealed that GTA has begun working with event managers to implement green event practices which will help to mitigate the negative environmental impacts associated with events.

“We started this with Guyana Carnival and it is our plan to continue to do so with other major events. We have asked THAG/Restaurants to start with three small but import green initiatives for Guyana Restaurant Week”

These initiatives include employing the use of biodegradable boxes and paper bags instead of plastic for takeaways. Among the restaurants participating this year include Bistro Café and Bar, Café Bellvana, Herdmanston Lodge, Terra Mare Restaurant, The Duke and Xie Xie.
