DPI, Guyana, Saturday, July 6, 2019

Residents of Cane Grove, Mahaica, East Coast of Demerara are set to benefit from a new access road. They will no longer have to traverse the loam road to access their homes as the street will be rehabilitated using asphalt.

This was announced by Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Jaipaul Sharma, on Saturday, during a community meeting at the Virginia Primary School.

Minister Sharma deemed this the largest road project undertaken in any region.

“It costs around $103M… we built roads in Region 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 but none ever at this amount.”

Minister Sharma promised to return to the community and meet with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to discuss the state of the community’s streets which require repair.

It was in 2018, former Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson committed to repairing the road. It was explained that monies had to be budgeted for the upgrading of the access road.

The allocated fund is part of the $38.5Billion budgeted for the Ministry of Public Infrastructure in 2019 to continue the development of roads, bridges and other infrastructure works across the country.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes was also present at the community meeting. She encouraged the residents to get involved in their NDC’s to ensure that allocated funds are utilised in a manner which benefits the community.

The community meeting is part of the Coalition Government’s efforts to engage citizens at the grassroots level to have a first-hand look at the challenges they face. Before the meeting, the government ministers walked about the community where they held one-on-one discussions with residents.
