DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, August 4, 2020

With the swearing-in of Guyana’s 9th Executive President His Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali, ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were reminded of their obligations to follow the President’s directives and to continue serving the state and the people of the nation.

This declaration was made by the, Chief of Staff (ag) of the GDF, Brigadier Godfrey Bess during a virtual address to his ranks on Monday.

Immediately after taking the oath of office on August 2, President Ali became the Commander in Chief of the armed forces and Minister of Defence.

Pledging the GDF’s loyalty to the constitution of Guyana and the government, Brigadier Bess asserted that just as the Force has performed in the past years the same respect and service shall be given to President Ali.

“It is important that I remind you at this time that the GDF remains an apolitical national institution and therefore will continue to uphold its noble and exemplary tradition of service to the Guyanese nation and all our people,” the Chief of Staff said.

He continued, “I also recommit the service of officers and rank to the conduct of the GDF constitutional mandate, as we all put our shoulders to the wheel in order to deter aggression, defend our national sovereignty and ensure that the government of our country has a safe and secure place.”

While promising that the resources of the GDF will be channelled to the state under the guidance of the President, Brigadier Bess assured his energy will be invested towards fashioning a more reformed and professional Force.
