GECOM in charge of elections – Pres. Granger

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, March 6, 2019

President David Granger has deemed today’s meeting with Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo as “fruitful” with both sides agreeing to work to find a solution to the confronting issues.

The engagement, he noted, focused primarily on the role of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), since the hosting of General and Regional Elections lies with that body.

President Granger reminded that GECOM is an autonomous body, therefore, his Government cannot intervene or interfere with its independence.

“The President, the executive or any other body cannot intervene, intrude, interfere with the work of GECOM, so we have to allow GECOM to do its work. In that regard the Leader of the Opposition was insistent that a date be set,” the President noted.

He reminded of the content of his February 25 letter to GECOM where he expressed his willingness to meet and determine their needs and readiness for General and Regional Elections.

President Granger said the door remains open and the Opposition Leader has agreed to another meeting, therefore, Guyanese can be assured that credible elections will be held.

Government is set the meet with GECOM soonest and the Head of State has also assured that the engagement will be a respectful one.

Detailed story to follow.
