GECOM still to consider extension of recount timeline

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, May 27, 2020

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is still to decide on an extension to its 25-day timeline for the national recount of the ballots of March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections. The process is scheduled to end on Saturday, May 30.

The commission was hoping to complete the review of the 2,339 ballot boxes, representing votes from the country’s 10 electoral districts, within 25 days. However, with more than half of the ballot boxes recounted to date, the commission will have to extend the period.

Reports are that the seven-member body will meet on Thursday to deliberate on the extension.

At the end of today’s recount, the commission had completed a further 93 ballot boxes, taking the total recounted so far to 1,383 with a remaining 956.

Today’s recount saw the completion of 19 boxes from Region Three, 22 from Region Four, 19 from Region Six, nine from Region Seven, 11 from Region Eight and 13 from Region Nine.

A total of 1,337 Statements of Recount (SOR) for the General Elections were tabulated along with 1336 for the Regional polls.
