GECOM to decide on anomaly found with ballot box at the Diamond Nursery School

DPI, Guyana, Monday, May 18, 2020

More anomalies have been discovered as the recount of the ballots cast at the March 2, General and Regional Elections moves into its thirteenth day.

Speaking to members of the media today, counting agent for the Alliance for Change (AFC) Varun Mohabir said the irregularity was found in one of the ballot boxes for District Four at the Diamond Nursery School.

Mohabir related that when box 4124 was brought to Station Eight to begin the recount, it was discovered the incorrect Official List of Electors (OLE) was in the box because the official OLE stated there were 366 electors but only 319 votes were issued.

The matter was brought to the attention of a supervisor and it was during their investigation of the matter that the correct OLE for the Diamond Nursery School was found in box 4122 at Station 10.

It was highlighted that both boxes were resealed and returned to the container to await a decision from the commission.

Additionally, while the recount for Region One has been completed, there were several discrepancies found.  A total of 47 certificates of employment (COEs) are missing from 26 boxes examined which puts in doubt the credibility of numerous votes.

Fifty (50) COEs were recorded on the OLEs for these boxes but only three were found in the respective boxes. Further, in ballot box 1045, there was no OLE. The only content in this box was the total ballots used.
